The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team beat California Baptist in five sets on Saturday night at the Thunderdome, California Baptist Athletics reported. It was the second straight night the Lancers had gone the distance, after a five-set match at Cal Poly on Friday, and the first ever meeting between the two programs, who met as Big West opponents.

Santa Barbara took the opening set 25-17, closing it on a 7-4 run after the Lancers had kept pace early, the CBU recap said. California Baptist answered in the second set, leading from an early 4-1 advantage through a 25-22 win that tied the match.

The third set turned late. California Baptist trailed by five points before tying the score at 14, then took its first lead of the set at 25-24 in extra points. Santa Barbara tied it once more, but two Gaucho errors finished the Lancers' comeback and put California Baptist ahead two sets to one, according to the recap.

Santa Barbara forced a fifth set in the fourth. A 4-0 Gaucho run in the middle of the set flipped the momentum, the recap said, and although the Lancers came back from six points down to tie it at 22, Santa Barbara scored three of the next four points to level the match.

The fifth set went past the usual 15 points. California Baptist reached set point first at 16-15, but the Gauchos scored four of the next five points to win the set 19-17 and the match, the recap said.
