Lobero Theatre Addition Moves Forward With Landmarks Backing
The Historic Landmarks Commission supported a roughly 10,000-square-foot rear addition and forwarded the project to the Planning Commission.

The Historic Landmarks Commission has supported the concept for a rear addition to the Lobero Theatre and forwarded the project to the Planning Commission, advancing one of downtown's most significant cultural-venue projects.
The proposal calls for a roughly 10,000-square-foot addition at the rear of the historic theatre, with a height exception requested to accommodate the design. The landmarks commission's support moves the project to the Planning Commission for the next stage of review.

The Lobero is among Santa Barbara's oldest continuously operating theatres and a cornerstone of the city's performing arts scene. Any change to the building draws close scrutiny, which is why the landmarks review came first.
The Planning Commission will now take up the project, including the height exception and any environmental and design review required for the addition.
A final decision is still ahead. But with landmarks backing secured, the expansion has cleared its first major public hurdle.
